Creative Safety Initiatives will offer the following courses during 2008:


Drug and Alcohol Awareness Training

Drug and alcohol use at work is a major issue concerning the building and construction industry nationally.  Through the Drug and Alcohol Awareness Training participants will discover the negative consequences that can arise from using drugs and alcohol during work hours through the programs message of ‘Not at Work’. 

This training session takes approximately 1 ½ hours to complete

Occupational Health and Safety Committee Training

Most building and construction sites in the ACT have specific Occupational Health and Safety Committees that are dedicated to ensuring that worker safety is paramount in this industry.  Nationally recognised Occupational Health and Safety Committee Training will provide these committee members with skills to assist them in this role, and provide them with up-to-date occupational health and safety information

This training session takes approximately 1 day to complete

Safe Work Methods Statement Development and Risk Assessment

Safe Work Method Statements are a way of effectively communicating agreed work practices to a group or workplace.  This program will assist participants in identifying issues in their workplace and developing effective Safe Work Methods Statements for workers on site. 

This training session takes approximately 2 hours to complete

Occupational Health and Safety for Manager and Supervisors

A step further from simply being aware of occupational health and safety issues is to implement, develop and manage a system for recognising and dealing with these issues.  Occupational Health and Safety for Managers and Supervisors Training will give attendees the skills and knowledge required to be involved with this management systems process and develop further strategies to ensure building and construction industry worker safety. 

This training session takes approximately 5 hours to complete

OH&S Employee Responsibility, Drug & Alcohol and Fatigue Training

The Creative Safety Initiatives OH&S Employee Responsibility Drug and Alcohol training contain the following parts:

Part 1 – OHS Act
This section will cover all relevant OHS Legislation, mostly focusing on the ACT OH &S Act 1989 and will discuss duties of care, responsibilities of employers and employees and the objectives of the legislation.

Part 2 – Drugs and Alcohol
This section will contain a lot of information regarding drug and alcohol use in the building and construction industry and the CSI Drug and Alcohol Program and facilities.  It also contains information regarding the negative impact of drug and alcohol use on safety, and ways to deal with these issues in the workplace.  It goes into quite a bit of details about the why different drugs (alcohol, marijuana, speed, ecstasy, ice etc) affect the body and also includes a small practical experiment to highlight how much a standard drink is.

Part 3 – Fatigue
Fatigue can be a big problem in our industry and this section of the Gold Card will cover many of the major themes and issues highlighted during our CSI Health and Safety Training Session and Workshop on Fatigue.  It includes comparisons with fatigue and alcohol use, definitions of fatigue as well as workplace management systems to help deal with fatigue

This training session takes approximately 2 hours to complete

Sun Protection

This training program will aim to focus on the safety issues in relation to hazards of excessive sun exposure on building and construction sites. Preventative and control measures will be discussed to eliminate or reduce hazardous health impacts of sun exposure.

This training session takes approximately 1 hour to complete

Nutrition of the Building & Construction Worker

Proper nutrition is important in keeping energy levels up on the job, reducing stresses on the body and reducing the risk of chronic disease. This program will focus on promoting healthy eating habits for optimal working performance for the building and construction worker.

This training session takes approximately 1 hour to complete

New South Wales OH&S Induction Card (Green/White Card)

The New South Wales OH&S Induction Card is a course in occupational health and safety for the building and construction industry.  Participants will address issues such as safe work standards, reporting unsafe work practices and chemical management. This training takes one full day of training to complete and is conducted by a trainer accredited by NSW WorkCover.

This training session takes approximately 8 hours to complete

Manual Handling in the Workplace

Manual handling is a common requirement in many workplaces, but none as frequently as the building and construction industry.  The Manual Handling in the Workplace training offered by Creative Safety Initiatives will provide everyday building and construction workers with knowledge and skills to help protect them against injuries suffered through incorrect manual handling techniques. 

This training session takes approximately 1 ½ hours to complete

Height Safety (Fall Prevention) Training

Due to the high risk nature of the building and construction industry it is important that all workers have an understanding of the safety issues surrounding height safety.  The Height Safety training course will provide participants with the skills to assess these uses and use fall protection equipment safely and effectively.  This training course is conducted by Creative Safety Initiatives in conjunction with ActewAGL.

This training session takes approximately 4 hours to complete

Asbestos Awareness Training

This course aims to provide basic knowledge about the issues & dangers of asbestos as well as an outline of essential safety measures for identification and safe work methods surrounding Asbestos.

This training session takes approximately 6 hours to complete

OHS Auditor Training

This course will allow participants to engage with the audit process, and participate in auditing procedures. This course aims, in a very practical way, to provide you with the skills and knowledge to fulfil these roles and responsibilities in your workplace. It is based around workplace examples and involves an innovative two-day audit of a virtual company undertaken in small groups. It clearly links the process of OHS management systems auditing to improvements in business OHS performance through this focus. CSI provides this training in conjunction with Safety Systems Biz.

This training session takes approximately 5 days to complete

Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety

Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety provides comprehensive training in important occupational health and safety issues. Attendees will receive formal training in the issues surrounding occupational health and safety and will be required to complete some work outside of the training room. 

This training session takes approximately 4 months to complete

Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment

Participants who complete a Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment will receive a nationally recognised qualification in this area.  Participants will learn about the preparation and development of training packages and programs, developing authentic assessment for this training, and methods of appropriate delivery. 

This training session takes approximately 3 months to complete

Introduction to Information & Communication Technology

This basic computer skills training course is aimed at people with minimal skills in computer operations.  This course covers: 

  • Basic computer usage, starting and shutting down a computer
  • Navigating the desktop
  • Printing information
  • Organising files and folders
  • Producing word documents (Microsoft Word)
  • Producing spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel)
  • Accessing and using the internet

This training session takes approximately 16 hours to complete

Intermediate Information & Communication Technology

This intermediate computer skills training course extends beyond the basic computer course by introducing more complex document preparation and data management.
This course covers: 

  • Production of professional word documents

(i.e.: letters, reports, meeting minutes) (Microsoft Word)

  • Usage of formulas and analysing of data in excel Producing spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel)

This training session takes approximately 16 hours to complete
